Mango Champion takes home coveted mango tray for a juicy $29,000
Nuccio Camuglia, owner of Fruity Capers in Toowong, Queensland was crowned the Mango Champion for 2017 at the Brisbane Produce Market Charity Mango Auction on Thursday, 5 October.
Fruity Capers is regular supporter of local charities and after attending the Annual Brisbane Product Market Charity Mango Auction for 15 years, Nuccio decided it was time to have a crack at the action himself and put in a bid.
“This morning isn’t about me – it’s about the charities that the money is going towards. I know it’s a lot of money, but in my eyes its $29,000 well spent,” said Mr Camuglia.
“Mango season is one of our favourite times of the year at Fruity Capers.”
The auction, which has become a celebrated and quintessential fundraising event for Queensland, helped raise much needed funds for Diabetes Queensland and Life Education Queensland.
While the mangoes were the prized auction item, a host of other big ticket items were auctioned off to a full house of eager bidders.
Brisbane Markets® Chairman, Tony Joseph, said the Brisbane Produce Market hosts the only Mango Auction in the country, bringing the community together to raise funds for charity.
“Including funds raised from all our fundraising activities this morning, we are excited to donate over $38,000 to charity,” said Mr Joseph.
The Brisbane Produce Market Annual Charity Mango Auction was attended by Australian professional boxer Jeff Horn, NRL Legend Sam Thaiday and celebrity chef Matt Golinksi as the official event ambassadors.
Earth Markets’ George Manettas has been crowned the 2016 Mango King after a heart pumping bidding war for the symbolic first tray of mangoes on 6 October at the Brisbane Produce Market’s annual charity auction.
The active Your Local Fruit Shop retailer program participant paid $22,000 for the coveted tray of 16 golden fruits, all kensington prides from Sklorios Produce, in Berry Springs, Northern Territory.
A large crowd gathered on the trading floor to see emcee Bill McDonald hand over to celebrity auctioneer, Haesley Cush, to get the bidding going.READ THE FULL STORY
