Winter guide to seasonal fruit and vegetables

Brisk nights and cool sunny days have us dreaming about fruit and vegetables to boost the immune system and warm the tummy this winter. Winter Citrus

Winter is the time for Queensland’s citrus to shine! The Burnett region in particular is famous for their citrus and you can expect to see lots of locally-grown oranges, lemons, limes, mandarins and grapefruits about. The easy-peel skin of mandarins make them perfect for school lunches and who can forget the joy of biting into an orange segment at half time of winter sporting matches.

Don’t just stop at snack time though! Add lemon curd to toast, create a delicious citrus cake or enjoy lemon and limes in your savoury dishes. For example, limes can be used to add flavour to a range of winter dishes, like a heartwarming Thai Soup or squeezed over some spicy enchiladas.

Winter Berries

Strawberries always perform well in Queensland during the colder months and this year is no different. Strawberries are everyone’s favourite dessert alternative but can also be eaten as a snack throughout the day. Now is a great time to get around those classic winter veggies, with plenty of potato, carrots, parsnips and beetroot around to accompany a classic winter roast. They also hold up well with long cooking times so are perfect for casseroles or stews. As we come to the latter half of the season vegetables such as broccoli, beans, brussels sprouts, and sweet potato are still in great supply. Pumpkins also thrive in the colder weather, so buy in bulk and go hard on pumpkin soup, roasted pumpkin and pumpkin mash.

Winter Herbs and Spices

Warm up this winter by adding some Queensland-grown chillies to your dish. They are in great supply and going for cheap. You can add chilli to almost any winter dish to give it a kick, from soups to curries. Locally grown coriander and continental parsley are also great choices to add flavour to your winter warmers.
