Brisbane Produce Report

11 April

With school holidays coming to an end, it’s time to return to healthy lunchboxes and home cooked dinners. Visit your local fruit and veg shop to discover the seasonal autumn produce making its way through the Brisbane Markets and on to your plate.

Our pick of the week is Avocado as there is an overlap of the Shepard and Hass seasons coming from North Queensland, which means plenty of supply and low prices. Make the most of this healthy, affordable all rounder that can be added to toast, salads, smoothies, sauces and even used in desserts like these Chocolate Truffles.

Iceberg Lettuce is in great supply from the Lockyer Valley, perfect for salads and sandwiches.

You’ll find Capsicum and Zucchini to be affordable this week, both coming from Bundaberg. Cut up some Capsicum for a healthy, crunchy snack for school lunchboxes, then treat the kids with these Cauliflower, Zucchini and Halloumi Fritters when they get home.

Also well priced, Shallots from Gatton bring a mild Onion flavour to dishes, enhancing the taste profile of various cuisines.

We are well into Custard Apple season, with fruit from South East Queensland and Northern New South Wales great eating. Custard Apple have sweet, creamy flesh that’s a delightful treat on its own or as a dessert ingredient.

Pineapples from North Queensland are still abundant and priced to be enjoyed. Enjoy as a sweet, healthy snack or try some Pan-Fried Pineapple for a decadent treat.

Sweet Persimmon are now in full swing, with South East Queensland farms sending both Hachiya and Fuyu varieties in to the Markets. Fuyu Persimmon are best enjoyed when firm, while Hachiya should be enjoyed when mushy (treat them like an Avocado).

If you’d like to try something a little different this week, Jujubes are in season, coming from South Australia and Victoria. Jujubes, also known as ‘Chinese Dates’, are a sweet fruit that can be eaten fresh or dried for use in desserts. They’re sweet, a little chewy, and packed with vitamin C, perfect for when the weather starts to get cooler.

Your local A better choice! fruit and veg shop hand picks their produce from the Brisbane Markets at Rocklea, which comes from thousands of Australian farms. Why not call in and see your local fruit and veg shop for the best quality, choice, freshness, and service available!
