Brisbane Produce Report

13 March

Following the weather events from last weekend, you can be assured that your local, independent A better choice! fruit and veg shop has been working hard to ensure there is a large selection of quality, fresh fruit and vegetables sourced from the Brisbane Markets to fill your shopping basket this week.

Monday is St Patrick’s Day, and to be sure to be sure, you can guarantee that our pick of the week is one of everybody’s favourite green vegetables, Zucchini. There is excellent supply coming from the Granite Belt and Bundaberg, and Zucchinis get a green tick of approval for a healthy vegetable, packed with vitamins A and C, calcium and iron. Even better, they are a low-calorie vegetable making them a perfect side dish. If you are looking for a way to add Zucchini into your meals, try these Zucchini Corn Cakes.

Another great green vegetable that is of excellent value this week is Green Capsicum, from growers in Stanthorpe. Capsicums are delicious either raw or cooked, so grab a few and get creative with how you can incorporate them into your menu at home this week.

The abundance of Gold Sweet Potatoes from Bundaberg continues! If you are stocking up on Sweet Potatoes, store them in a cool, dark place (to prevent sprouting). Try to avoid refrigerating and avoid washing them before storing to make them last longer.  When you are ready to eat your Sweet Potatoes: wash, chop, and cook. Simple!

Whether you are looking to add a touch of flavour to a sweet or savoury dish, Lemons from Bundaberg have you covered. In great supply and excellent quality this week, if you are craving something sweet, try this Lemon Yoghurt Cake or something savoury like a Green Style Chicken and Rice, Lemons add the right amount of zing that elevates a dish to the next level. A simple squeeze of a Lemon wedge can make a huge difference that gives you that extra flavour.

Custard Apples from Beerwah are perfect in quality and super tasty. When picking your Custard Apple, look for a pale green fruit that is slightly firm. For maximum enjoyment, cut the Custard Apple in half and scoop out the middle with a spoon, just like a Passionfruit. Remember, by shopping at your local A better choice! fruit and veg shop, you are not only supporting Australian farmers and local businesses, but you are also ensuring the freshest, locally grown, quality produce, hand-selected from the Brisbane Markets.
