Brisbane Produce Report

15 March

It’s a wonderful week for locally grown fruit and veg, with Queensland producing a wonderful array of autumn produce. Visit your local fruit and veg shop this week to explore a variety of seasonal produce sourced fresh from the Brisbane Markets!

Lemons are pick of the week, with a good supply coming from Bundaberg and North Queensland at great prices. As we approach the cooler months, Lemons are an excellent way to dodge illness, giving you a boost in vitamin C, fibre and antioxidants. You’ll also find North Queensland grown Limes abundant and well-priced.

The price has come back on Pineapples thanks to supply from growers from the Sunshine Coast, all the way to North Queensland. Topless Pineapples are the best value while still offering the same flavour and nutrition as those sold whole.

We are in the middle of Dragon Fruit season and seeing good quantities of this tropical fruit coming from Bundaberg. Dragon Fruit offers a sweet, visually striking addition to fruit salads and desserts.

The Custard Apple season is also in full swing now, with good availability from North Queensland bringing prices down. Custard Apples are expected to have a wonderful season this year, so while you can eat them as is, it might also be time to experiment cooking with Custard Apples, starting with this Teacake recipe.

Also in season, Persimmons are in full supply from growers throughout South East Queensland. Enjoy the sweet fruit fresh, cut up in salads, or used in baking recipes like these Precious Persimmon Muffins.

Prices of Sheppard Avocados are down this week, with North Queensland grown Avos making their way through the Brisbane Markets and into your local fruit and veg shop.

You’ll find Red and Green Capsicum from Stanthorpe and Bundaberg at affordable prices. With the weather cooling, it’s a great time to try this Creamy Capsicum Pasta. If you’re feeling adventurous, Okra and Bitter Melon are in good supply from Gatton. Both originating from Africa, Okra is a long, thin seed pod that can add unique flavour to stir-fries or curries, while Bitter Melon is a highly nutritious fruit, also used in stir-fries.

Your local A better choice! fruit and veg shop hand picks their produce from the Brisbane Markets at Rocklea, which comes from thousands of Australian farms. Why not call in and see your local fruit and veg shop for the best quality, choice, freshness, and service available!
