Brisbane Produce Report

18 July

While this week’s cold snap will no doubt affect the supply of some produce lines in the coming weeks, Brisbane Markets wholesalers source produce from thousands of Australian growers, which means there will still be a large range of affordable, quality fruit and vegetables making their way through the Central Market to your local fruit and veg shop.

The pick of the week is Snow Peas from Bundaberg which are in excellent supply and great eating. These crisp, green marvels are an excellent source of dietary fibre, vitamin C, folic acid, B vitamins and phosphorous for strong bones. Eat them blanched with a dipping sauce or for something more substantial why not try this Tofu and Snow Pea Stir Fry.

Bundaberg growers are also keeping the Central Market well supplied with Zucchini and Golden Sweet Potato. Sweet potatoes are much lower in starch than regular potatoes and a good source of Vitamins A, C and iron. These Sweet Potato Pancakes make a healthy after-school treat.

The warmer weather of North Queensland has helped maintain good supplies of Tomatoes, Capsicum, Beans and Sweet Corn although the cold snap will affect these lines in weeks to come. Sweet Corn delivers plenty of dietary fibre, B vitamins and iron. Enjoy it on its own boiled, steamed or barbecued or as an ingredient in hearty winter treats like these classic Corn Fritters.

It’s good news for salad lovers with leafy veg from the Lockyer valley well supplied including Cauliflower, Iceberg Lettuce, Silverbeet, Mesclun salad mix and baby Spinach. While all leafy veg contains essential dietary fibre, Silverbeet leads the pack with an abundance of Vitamins A, C, B6 and iron. Pair it with your choice of seasonal veg in these quick and easy Silverbeet Wraps with Peanut Sauce.

There is a steady supply of Passionfruit coming through the Markets with crops from local growers on the Sunshine Coast and Bundaberg supplemented with New South Wales fruit. Passionfruit pulp is a delicious source of protein, Vitamin C and iron. Eat it straight from the husk or for something indulgent, spoon it over ice cream or cheesecake.

There is a steady supply of Watermelon from the Northern Territory and Rockmelon, Honeydew and Candy Melon from the Bowen Gumlu region that are particularly good eating.

Supplies of Honey Murcott Mandarins out of Gayndah and Mundubbera are ramping up making them great value. If you’re look to spice things up, Ginger from the Sunshine Coast is also well-supplied and of good quality. Bring them together in this Aussie Mandarin Ginger Tart.
