Brisbane Produce Report

19 January

We are well into the summer season of fruits and vegetables with plenty of fresh, healthy produce making their way from Australian growers, through the Brisbane Markets and into your local fruit and veg shop. Find out what is in season, in abundance, and affordably priced.

Our pick of the week is Broccoli. Grown in Lockyer Valley and Victoria, this vitamin rich superfood is not just a healthy staple, but also an affordable and readily available vegetable that works in so many different dishes. While Broccoli may seem like a winter veg that needs to be served hot, you can also try this Broccoli Slaw as a crunchy, tasty side for summer barbeques.

Bundaberg Sweet Potatoes are back! After a harvest delay due to the wet weather, we’re now seeing an abundance of these root vegetables at great prices. Incredibly versatile in the kitchen, Sweet Potato can be used to accompany roasts, make hearty salads like this Sweet Potato, Spring Onion and Feta Salad, or even deserts like Brownies.

Green Beans from the Lockyer Valley are great value and a great source of vitamins A, C and K. For a salad with a fantastic crunch, try this Green Bean, Feta and Walnut Salad.

Also from the Lockyer Valley, Continental Cucumbers are in good supply. Not just for salads, Cucumbers can be added to all kinds of drinks, coolers and smoothies. Just try this Blackberry and Cucumber Spritz.

Tomatoes are in season in Western Australia and South Australia, making their way through the Brisbane Markets to a fruit and veg shop near you. For a meal bursting with flavour, try this Creamy Roasted Onion Tomato Soup in a Crusty Bread Bowl.

The Dragon Fruit season is picking up with South East Queensland grown fruit increasing supply. Dragon Fruit comes in several varieties including red flesh and white flesh, with a striking colour and shape. Enjoy eating this tropical fruit as-is or add to smoothies for a boost of iron, magnesium and vitamin C.

Lychees from Mareeba are still great eating and reasonably priced. While they’re an ideal snack on the go for kids as the skin acts as a eco friendly wrapper, Lychees really shine when they’re added to cocktails, such as this Cucumber and Lychee Sour.

Another summer favourite, Watermelon are coming in cheap from Bundaberg and North Queensland. With Grapefruit also in season, coming in from Bundaberg and Victoria, why not put them together and try this Salad of Seared Tuna with Seedless Watermelon, Grapefruit and Avocado.

Grapefruit isn’t the only citrus in good supply, with North Queensland grown Limes and several varieties of Victorian grown Oranges at affordable prices. Try this delicious Grilled Lime Chicken with Sweet Potato Salad, or even go full citrus with an Orange and Grapefruit Salsa. Stone Fruit is another summer classic, and while there is a good supply of Tasmanian grown Apricots this week, the season will slow soon, so take advantage of them while you can! Meanwhile, Plums from Victoria are still abundant and priced for enjoyment. Great for a sweet juicy snack, they also go wonderfully in a weekend breakfast like this Plum and Ricotta Pancake Stack.

Your local A better choice! fruit and veg shop hand picks their produce from the Brisbane Markets at Rocklea, which comes from thousands of Australian farms. Why not call in and see your local fruit and veg shop for the best quality, choice, freshness, and service available!
