Brisbane Produce Report

2 May

There are some fantastic fruit and vegetables available this week as we’re seeing the last of the warm weather crops still in the Markets, while winter vegetables and citrus fruits have also started coming in. Make sure you have everything you need for delicious fresh food over the long weekend.

Our pick of the week is Cauliflower as the price has come down with the overlap of the start of the Lockyer Valley season and the end of the New South Wales and Victoria seasons. For an unusual but delicious combination, try this warming Cauliflower and Pear Soup recipe.

The Lockyer Valley has experienced a great start to their winter vegetable season, with temperate weather and a full moon just as they started harvesting. As a result, you will also see good availability and prices on Broccoli, Celery and Cabbage from this region.

We’re in the last few weeks of peak Fennel season in Victoria, so while this vegetable is in good supply now, we will see supplies shorten up soon. Make the most of Fennel and the cooler weather now by making hearty winter soups or this Salmon and Fennel Tray Bake.

Both Hass and Shepard Avocados from North Queensland are affordably priced. The Shepard Avocado season is starting to wind down at the same time as Has Avocados are ramping up. The overlap of seasons has resulted in an abundant supply, so whether you like adding them to salad, smashing on toast or blending in smoothies, you’ll be looking for ways to use avocados this week.

While they may be considered more of a summer fruit, Pineapples from Yeppoon and Maryborough are fantastic eating this week. The golden flesh is bursting with tropical flavour, making it a refreshing snack on its own or a delicious addition to fruit salads and desserts.

You’ll find great value new season Apples and Pears from Victoria. Thanks to favourable growing conditions, this year’s Pears are particularly flavoursome, so make sure you pick some up from your local fruit and veg shop.

Imperial Mandarins from Queensland are in season and bursting with tangy-sweet flavour. These easy-to-peel citrus fruits are perfect for snacking, adding to salads, or juicing for a refreshing drink.

Plums from Victoria are still ripe, juicy, and in good supply. The stone fruit season is coming to an end though, which means Plums will shorten up in the next few weeks. If you love these summer fruits, don’t miss out on a last hurrah before the next season starts in December.

Your local A better choice! fruit and veg shop hand picks their produce from the Brisbane Markets at Rocklea, which comes from thousands of Australian farms. Why not call in and see your local fruit and veg shop for the best quality, choice, freshness, and service available!
