Brisbane Produce Report

2 October 2025

With the winter football season coming to an end, why not support another team of Queenslanders that provides you with fresh, quality produce every week, even when the season is over. That is right, your local independent A better choice! store is stocked with premiership-quality fruit and vegetables from growers across Australia, sourced through the Brisbane Markets.

Our pick of the week is Green Oak Lettuce from the Sunshine Coast and Caboolture. Green Oak Lettuce is a variety of hydroponic Lettuce that has a mild, sweet flavour, and is perfect for salads, sandwiches and burgers, as well as for the big game. Only wash your lettuce once you are ready to use it and keep the head of the lettuce intact until you are ready to eat. When storing the lettuce, wrap the head in a damp paper towel and place it in an open plastic bag to ensure it can breathe before placing it in the fridge, where it should keep for anywhere between seven and 10 days.

Roma Tomatoes from Bowen are in abundance this week, and they are the perfect ingredient for cooking, making sauces, and drying. Stock up on these juicy tomatoes while they are of fantastic value. If you are up to the challenge, get creative in the kitchen and whip up a pasta sauce from scratch, or prepare some Tomato chutney or paste to store for later use.

Also from growing regions in Bowen, the Yellow Bull Horn Capsicum, also known as Corno di Toro Giallo, is in great supply. Give this Corn Cakes with Yellow Capsicum Relish a try this week. You could also combine with our other picks, Green Oak Lettuce and Roma Tomatoes, and create yourself a delicious, vibrant salad or add them to a juicy burger, especially for those who may be entertaining at home watching the Grand Final on Sunday.

A unique fruit that is in great supply right now is Bitter Melon, also known as an Asian Gourd. Bitter Melons are grown in North Queensland and the Northern Territory. For those who have not come across this fruit before, they are an oblong cucumber-like fruit with wrinkled skin. Although Bitter Melons are commonly used as a vegetable, they are a fruit and can be eaten just like a cucumber or added into stir-fries and curries.

From the Sunshine Coast, Mulberries are also making their way to your local fruit and veg shop through the Brisbane Markets right now. These sweet, slightly tart, and juicy berries are the perfect snack or healthy addition to your dessert. Mulberries have various health benefits, and contain vitamins C, E and K as well as fibre, potassium and iron. With a large array of Queensland-grown produce in offer this week, make sure you head to your local independent A better choice! store with produce sourced through the Brisbane Markets.
