This week’s pick of the week is Snow Peas from Bundaberg and Victoria. With excellent supply this week and the quality is superb. Snow Peas are a sweet and versatile vegetable, packed with dietary fibre, vitamin B, and contains protein. To keep your Snow Peas crisp and fresh, store them refrigerated in an airtight container where they will typically last between three to four days. The best Snow Peas are flat, bright green, and have a smooth clean skin free of blemishes. Enjoyed raw or lightly steamed, these vibrant green pods are a welcome addition to meals this week.
For those looking to try a different root vegetable, Taro from North Queensland is currently in excellent supply. Taro has a texture similar to Potato and a flavour often compared to Sweet Potato or Chestnut. When selecting Taro, choose bulbs that feel heavy for their size and are free from bruising. Taro can be prepared in much the same way as Potatoes, including roasting, boiling, baking or frying. Store Taro in a cool, dark place such as the pantry, where it will keep for three to seven days.
Lebanese Cucumbers from the Lockyer Valley and Northern New South Wales are in healthy supply, with quality outstanding. Crisp and refreshing, they are ideal for salads and light meals. For inspiration, try incorporating Cucumber into a Quinoa, Cucumber and Feta Salad, or prepare a simple, flavourful Cucumber Salad.
Apple season is currently in full swing, with an extensive range of varieties available from growing regions, including Stanthorpe, New South Wales, Victoria, and South Australia. Popular varieties such as Red Delicious, Granny Smith and Royal Gala are in good supply and make a great addition to the shopping list. As evenings become cooler, Apples are also ideal for baking, with a warm Apple Crumble a popular seasonal favourite.
If you have not already noticed, Imperial Mandarins from North Queensland are now in peak supply. Easy to peel and full of flavour, Mandarins are perfect for snacking at any time of day. When selecting Mandarins, look for fruit that feels heavy and firm, with a fresh citrus aroma and bright skin.
