Brisbane Produce Report

25 January

As we say goodbye to the summer holidays and children start returning to school, there are plenty of delicious fruit and vegetable treats for packed lunches and healthy dinners. Check out the great value produce making its way through the Brisbane Markets and into a fruit and veg shop near you.

Our pick of the week is Lime, grown in Bundaberg and North Queensland. Due to the storms up north, many growers have harvested as much of their Limes as they can, resulting in an abundant supply of this zesty fruit. Whether used in drinks or as a key ingredient in desserts and savoury dishes, Limes are versatile and refreshing. For a culinary adventure, try this Lime Chicken with Mango Salsa recipe and support Queensland’s Lime growers!

There is also plenty of Watermelon available and great value as there’s an overlap of the end of the North Queensland growing season and the start of New South Wales. Perfect for hot summer days, Watermelon is not only hydrating but also incredibly sweet. Enjoy it on its own or get creative with these Prawn, Watermelon and Feta Skewers for a refreshing summer barbecue treat.

Victorian grown Yellow Peaches are at their peak, offering a juicy and sweet flavour profile at snackable prices. Pack them in the kids lunches as a sweet treat at school, or create this delectable Peach and Prosciutto Salad with Sweet Red Wine Dressing recipe.

Also from Victoria, Plums are in good supply and price, delivering a delightful balance of sweetness and tart. Try this Plum and Chocolate Self-Saucing Pudding recipe for a mouth-watering dessert that showcases the unique flavour of Plums.

We’re still in Lychee season, with this Mareeba grown fruit readily available. With their exotic sweetness, Lychees are a great treat on their own or can be incorporated into various drinks and desserts.

With Stanthorpe, South Australia and Western Australia growing Gourmet Tomatoes, there are plenty of this salad friendly fruit making their way through the Brisbane Markets and into your local fruit and veg shop at great prices. Tomatoes are a kitchen staple, and their versatility makes them suitable for a wide range of dishes. For a gourmet snack, whip up this Tomato and Avocado Bruschetta.

Although they usually aren’t in full swing until March, there’s a good supply of Brussels Sprouts coming from Stanthorpe. Brussels Sprouts are not only nutritious but also add a delightful crunch to your meals. Elevate your side dish game with this Charred Brussels Sprout Salad.

Despite the weather events affecting some vegetable crops, one thing you can always count on is Mushrooms. South East Queensland grown Mushrooms are affordably priced this week, especially Button Mushrooms, Grey Oyster, King Oyster and Swiss Flats. For a delicious combination of flavours, try this Baked Tomato, Mushroom and Bacon Risotto.

Lockyer Valley grown Continental Cucumbers are also in healthy supply and price, making them a perfect addition to this week’s salads, sandwiches or snacks on the go. If you’re entertaining this long weekend, why not try this Lamb and Mushroom Blended Greek Meatballs with Feta Sauce and Cucumber Salad recipe.

A kitchen staple, Sweet Potatoes are affordably priced thanks to the good supply coming out of Bundaberg. Packed with nutrients, Sweet Potatoes add a sweet and earthy flavour to your meals. Indulge in this Sweet Potato Satay Curry for a comforting and nutritious dinner option.
