Brisbane Produce Report

27 February 2026

As we kick off into the footy season for the year, it is a great reminder that just like supporting your local team, you should support your community by shopping at your local, independent fruit and vegetable store displaying the A better choice! logo. You will find a large range of fresh, quality produce sourced from Queensland’s heart of fresh produce, the Brisbane Markets.

This week’s pick of the week is Mangosteen from North Queensland. These delights have a distinguished flavour which is a combination of Lychee, Peach, Strawberry, and Pineapple. The texture of the flesh is a cross between a citrus fruit and Lychee. To select a perfect Mangosteen, choose fruit with a green and glossy stem; this indicates it is ripe. Another indicator will be the weight of the fruit; pick one that is heavy for its size and avoid fruit with weak and brown-looking stems, as this means the fruit is overripe.

Excellent value and eating quality, Watermelons from Chinchilla and New South Wales are one for the trolley this week. With the school term underway and weekend sports starting again, Watermelons are a great fruit choice to keep the kids hydrated. Sliced, diced, or in a wedged – sweet, juicy Watermelon is always a crowd pleaser.

Sheppard Avocados from regions across North Queensland are also in abundance. Known for their green, smooth, and glossy skin, Sheppard Avocados nutty and buttery flavour make them perfect for sliced toast, burgers, salads, tacos, and even blending in smoothies. This variety of Avocado has skin that stays green, even when ripe. Therefore, give them a gentle squeeze to tell if they are ripe. If they are soft, they are ready to eat now, and if they are slightly firm, they will be ready to eat in one to two days.

In the vegetable varieties, growing regions in South Australia are providing the Brisbane Markets with plenty of Eggplants. Not only are they superb value this week, but they are also a healthy choice. You can enjoy these purple delights in many ways, all while promoting a healthy lifestyle. Health benefits include aiding bone health, lowering blood pressure, and supporting digestion. Try these Eggplant Fritters for a healthy snack.

New-season Ginger from Gympie has hit the Markets and is excellent quality. With supply also coming from Bundaberg and Mareeba, there is lots of Ginger to go around. It is the perfect ingredient to add some flavour to your week! Try these tasty treats for your morning and afternoon teas: Ginger and Pear Cake or Baked Pears with Macadamias in Orange and Ginger Syrup.

For a large variety of fresh, quality, and seasonal produce, shop at your local, independent fruit and vegetable store displaying the A better choice! logo, knowing that the produce has been sourced through Queensland’s heart of fresh produce, the Brisbane Markets.
