Brisbane Produce Report

27 June

As we near the end of the financial year, you can be sure to find a plethora of great deals at your local independent A better choice! retailer, where you will also find fresh, Australian-grown produce delivered straight from the Brisbane Markets.

Our pick of the week is an Australian staple: Brushed Potatoes from Gatton. This hearty, earthy vegetable offers endless possibilities during the cold winter months – from roasting to mashing or even frying. Available all year round, this vegetable is not only versatile in the kitchen but also a crowd pleaser, kid friendly, and foolproof – for those not so good in the kitchen.

Thai Eggplant, unlike the larger, dark purple varieties, come in a range of colours including green, purple, white and striped patterns. This week, they are in great supply from Bundaberg and North Queensland. With a mild, slightly bitter flavour and a crunchy texture, Thai Eggplant is known for its ability to absorb flavours well, making it ideal for curries, stir-fries, and other dishes. Grab a few this week to get creative in the kitchen and make use of this unique vegetable.

The root vegetable perfect for winter consumption is Parsnip. Grown around Gatton, supply of Parsnips is excellent, so make sure you pick some up at your local independent A better choice! retailer this week. Not only is this vegetable the perfect ingredient for soups, casseroles, and stews, but they are packed with potassium, which helps reduce blood pressure and stress on the heart. Try this Upside Down Parsnip Tart. A hot tip for picking the perfect Parsnips: the whiter, the sweeter! Avoid picking up a Parsnip that is yellowing or browning.

It is “berry” good news for lovers of Raspberries as everyone’s favourite little red berry is filling the Brisbane Markets and are bursting with sweetness. Grown in Caboolture, these vibrant gems are nutrient-rich packed with antioxidants, fibre and vitamin C. They are a yummy addition to smoothies, porridge, or even a dessert! Raspberries do not usually last long, so consume them within a few days of purchase. To keep them fresh, store them in the fridge in a shallow container lined with paper towels to absorb excess moisture.

Red Grapes from New South Wales are bunched up and waiting to be added to your basket this week. Red Grapes are plump, bite-sized treats that are vitamin and fibre rich fruits. They are the perfect snack and so tasty they have even earned themselves charcuterie board status – the perfect match for salted meats and cheese. For ripe Grapes, look for plump bunches, firmly attached to their stems.

So, with half a year of healthy eating down, and another half a year to go, remember to shop where you see the A better choice! logo to find a variety of fresh, quality, and locally grown produce sourced from the Brisbane Markets.
