Brisbane Produce Report

28 March

As the Autumn chill sets in, and the Easter long weekend is upon us, hop into your local Fruit and Veg Shop to pick up fresh ingredients sourced from the Brisbane Markets for your favourite comfort food or celebratory dish.

Victorian grown Red and White Grapes are well stocked, well priced and perfect for snacking or adding to fruit salads and cheese boards. They are currently in good supply, great quality and well priced. The season will be a bit short this year due to an unseasonably wet spring, so now is the time to buy grapes!

With the weather cooling, we are seeing new season Granny Smith Apples coming out of Stanthorpe, Victoria and South Australia. Crisp and juicy, perfect for snacking or baking. For a boost of energy throughout the day, make these Raw Apple Pie Bars ahead of time!

Pears are in season now, with this year’s season expected to be a bumper due to good weather conditions in the Victorian growing areas over the spring and summer months. Pick some up this week at your local fruit and veg shop.

Bundaberg grown Dragonfruit is still in great supply. With vibrant pink skin and white or red flesh speckled with black seeds, this visually stunning fruit has a sweet flavour that can be enjoyed as is, in smoothies, salads or desserts.

Grapefruit from Dimbulah is also in good supply at your local fruit and veg shop. Known for their sweet, tangy taste and burst of flavour, Grapefruits are packed with nutritional value. Give this Orange and Grapefruit Salsa a try this long weekend.

Shepard Avocados from North Queensland are the perfect addition for your next taco night, Saturday brekkie or anything in-between!

If you are looking to add some extra flavour to your summer meals, then you can’t go past Capsicum from Stanthorpe, Bundaberg, and South Australia. Try throwing them on the BBQ for some generous char, add to pizza or salads for a delicious topping! Or if you’re looking to mix up your breakfast meals, try these Capsicum Pesto Eggs.

Bundaberg Sweet Potato is still in abundance, and has a delicious, sweet taste and vibrant colour, offering a flavourful alternative to traditional potatoes. Roast, mash, or bake it for a colourful addition to your summer meals.

Gourmet Pumpkin from Stanthorpe is now in the market and is excellent eating. Gourmet Pumpkin is packed with essential nutrients and contains beta-carotene which supports your immune system.

Leafy greens are abundant this time of year! Fancy Lettuce from Lowood is coming back into steady supply along with Bunch Spinach from Victoria, and Kale from Boonah. All are a delicious base to be used to make crisp, nutritious salads. Pick up some Kale from your local fruit and veg shop and try this Heart Smart Kale Salad a try!
