Brisbane Produce Report

9 February

While many growing regions are experiencing some unusual weather conditions that are affecting seasonal produce, there are still plenty of nutritious, quality fruit and vegetables making their way through the Brisbane Markets at great prices. Check out what’s in season this week so you can eat healthy and save by shopping at your local fruit and veg shop.

Our pick of the week is Gourmet Tomatoes as there’s an abundance in the Markets coming in from growing regions in Stanthorpe, Victoria, South Australia, and Western Australia. Whether used in salads, sandwiches, or pasta dishes, Gourmet Tomatoes are a great value item to build your recipes around.

Limes from North Queensland are still plentiful and priced to sell. Zesty and refreshing, Limes add a tangy twist to both sweet and savory dishes.

Also from North Queensland, we’re seeing Bananas coming through at affordable prices, just in time to add to school lunch boxes. For a fun and simple desert, you can even make this Banana Choc Chip Mug Cake in the microwave.

Victorian Plums are still juicy and sweet, but for something a little different, keep an eye out for Sugar Plums which are great eating at the moment. Their natural sweetness makes them a standout of stone fruit season.

We’re now in Gala Apple season and there are some deliciously sweet, crisp, Victorian grown Galas making their way through the Brisbane Markets and onto the shelves of your local fruit and veg shop. Whether enjoyed as a convenient snack, baked into pies, made into a sauce, or used to make a sweet Pork and Apple Slaw Burger.

Summer is a great time for healthy salads, and we’re spoilt for choice of ingredients at the moment. Iceberg Lettuce is incredibly cheap thanks to produce from Stanthorpe, Gatton and the Darling Downs making their way through the Markets. There’s also a good supply of Rocket and Baby Spinach coming up from Tasmania.

Known for its fiery heat and vibrant colour, Thai Green Chilli from Gatton is well priced so you can add a bold kick to Asian-inspired dishes, curries and sauces.

Brussels Sprout from Stanthorpe are in the middle of their growing season, so you should be able to find this versatile vegetable fresh and well stocked. Rich in nutrients, Brussels Sprouts are perfect for roasting, sautéing, adding to hearty stews, or even throwing together in a Charred Brussels Sprout Salad.
