Brisbane Produce Report

8 September

As the days get longer and the weather warms, it’s good to know spring favourites are starting to make their way through the Brisbane Markets and into your local fruit and veg shop. So, take advantage of abundant, in-season produce items and save on your weekly shop.

Our pick of the week is Cherry Tomatoes, which are in great supply from North Queensland regions, Bundaberg, and the Lockyer Valley. While Cherry Tomatoes are best priced, you can also find delicious Roma Tomatoes in good supply from Bundaberg and Bowen. For a healthy, simple yet satisfying meal, try this Roasted Cherry Tomato Salad that can be whipped up in less than half an hour.

We’re well and truly into the season for Ruby Grapefruit, with plenty of this fresh citrus fruit coming in from Gayndah. Known for a sweet, tangy taste and burst of flavour, Grapefruit are packed with nutritional value and health benefits for your skin, blood pressure and heart. Enjoyable to eat as is and fantastic mixed in juices and cocktails, you can also try adding Ruby Grapefruit to recipes like this Crab and Grapefruit Salad.

Citrus continues to deliver, with North Queensland Limes at your local fruit and veg shop. Make a refreshing juice or create a delicious salad dressing with a hint of Lime to really enhance the flavours!

It’s well and truly the time for Berries, with a bounty of quality Strawberries from the Sunshine Coast and Blueberries from Northern New South Wales on offer at your local fruit and veg shop. Super fresh and juicy, Berries can really enhance your morning breakfast when added to smoothies or topped on your favourite cereal. Grab a punnet this week and enjoy.

Tis the season for Hass Avocados, with this fruit growing well in farms from Mapleton in Queensland, all down to Northern New South Wales. Either smash up a delicious home-made guacamole, add to salads or sandwiches for an irresistible creamy flavour, or even add a new element to a home classic with this Avocado and Potato Mash with Steak dish.

Although we’re already seeing seasonal fruit availability change as we move into Spring, most winter vegetable lines are still abundant and affordable, so expect to see great quality North Queensland Capsicum well priced in your local fruit and veg shop for a while yet. For an incredibly flavoursome afternoon snack, try this Roasted Capsicum Bruschetta with Halloumi.

Sweet Potatoes from Bundaberg are also in great supply. While this kitchen staple is often associated with roasts, it’s actually versatile enough to be used from salads to desserts like these Sweet Potato Blondies, and even this fun Tex Mex Loaded Sweet Potato Fries.

The growing conditions in Gatton in the Lockyer Valley are still proving ideal for several winter vegetables like Iceberg Lettuce, Cauliflower and Broccoli. So why not bring them all together with a Broccoli and Cauliflower Bake with a salad on the side?

Your local A better choice! fruit and veg shop hand picks their produce from the Brisbane Markets at Rocklea, which comes from thousands of Australian farms. Why not call in and see your local fruit and veg shop for the best quality, choice, freshness, and service available!
