Brismark Director and Carter and Spencer Nominated Representative, Matthew Spencer, was recently awarded the 2026 Fresh Markets Australia (FMA) Young Achievers’ Award at the Hort Connections conference held in Adelaide.
Matthew, a fourth-generation wholesaler with his family business, Carter and Spencer, which has been at the Brisbane Markets since 1964, was nominated for the award by Brismark’s Chair Gary Lower, due to his active support, commitment, and dedication to the fresh produce industry.
Mr Lower said Matthew was an outstanding recipient of the Young Achievers’ Award, which recognises exceptional individuals who actively support their Market Chamber and strive for the betterment of the horticultural industry.
“Matthew has been heavily involved in the fresh fruit and vegetable wholesaling sector in Queensland for many years and has had a tremendous impact on the industry during his time both as a wholesaler and through his active involvement with Brismark,” Mr Lower said.
Upon winning the award, Matthew noted that although he had been singled out to win the prize, he would not be there accepting the award without the support of those around him, including his family, the team at the Carter and Spencer Group and Brismark.
“My family has been involved in the industry for a long time, so you could say that fresh produce is in the blood, but I love working in this industry, and I would like to thank my family for introducing me into it.
“I also need to thank the team at Carter and Spencer. Together we work hard to promote the importance of the fresh produce industry and the impact we can make in the lives of everyday Australians.”
Mr Spencer also thanked the Brismark Board for nominating him for this accolade and particularly Brismark’s Chair, Gary Lower, for his “ongoing valuable support and guidance as an emerging leader in the industry.”
