For 26 years, David Palethorpe has packed his truck full of plants every week and made the trip to Rocklea to sell his selection of plants to market lovers.
What started as a suggestion from a friend to grow plants on the side to supplement his income from his day job, has turned into a full-time business for Dave’s Plants. Now, the stall sells a selection of succulents, indoor plants and bromeliads.

“The market is my life and my livelihood, I look forward to coming every Saturday,” David said.
“Over the years, I have tried a few other markets but nothing compares to the Saturday Fresh Market! The new venue is so convenient and caters to all weather. I just love it.
“The plant area here is like its own little community. I love being able to interact with the customers, you get to build rapport with your regulars.”

David said that his clientele had gotten younger and changed their buying habits in recent years.
“It’s been interesting to watch habits change since COVID-19. People are gardening in smaller spaces with balcony and patio plants becoming very popular,” David said.
“There are a lot of young people who are new to the market and it’s great that they come to us for advice for their gardens.”
