Stallholder Spotlight: Sudon Eggs

Don and Sue Smith have played an integral role in the Saturday Fresh Market since the very first market was held in June 2004.

While their business has changed over time, their dedication to the Saturday Fresh Market has continued undisrupted for 20 years.

“I worked at Brisbane Markets for 47 years, and we started our market stall selling fruit and vegetables on the Gold Coast,” Don said.

“When the Saturday Fresh Market first started, Sue was still travelling down to the coast every weekend while I covered the stall in Rocklea, but in the end it was too far and too hard.”

So the pair sold their Gold Coast stall and consolidated at the Saturday Fresh Market.

As the market grew, Don and Sue adapted their stall to meet the needs of market-goers, and leant into their best seller, eggs, to launch Sudon Eggs.

“Our customers constantly say that our eggs are the best they have tasted and they return week after week,” Don said.

“There is a great camaraderie between stallholders at the Saturday Fresh Market, and you get to make a lot of friends! We enjoy coming every Saturday, it keeps us social and supplements our retirement income.”

Sudon Eggs works closely with farmers to secure a guaranteed supply of premium quality chicken eggs every single weekend.

“All of our eggs are and always have been cage-free, which is very important to our market customers – they just would not buy them if they were caged,” Don said.
