Recent reports of birds entering and nesting within Tenancy warehouses have highlighted the importance of Tenants ensuring they have appropriate measures in place to reduce the risk of bird ingress.
In several cases, birds have been seen gaining access into warehouse buildings through tenancy doors being left open for extended periods of time, allowing birds to move freely between adjoining leased areas.
Bird entry into Tenancy areas can quickly escalate from isolated incidents to ongoing nesting activity. This issue is of particular concern within multi-tenanted warehouses where open-air separation exists between leased premises.
Once birds gain access into a building, neighbouring Tenants may experience ongoing bird activity and contamination risks despite actively implementing pest prevention measures within their own tenancy areas.
Review your current operating practices
Tenants are reminded that under their Lease Agreements, Memorandums of Understanding and BML’s Rodent Control Policy, they are responsible for implementing and maintaining appropriate pest control measures within their leased premises.
BML requests that all Tenants review their current operating practices and ensure reasonable measures are being implemented to minimise opportunities for bird ingress and nesting within leased premises. This includes:
- ensuring premises are appropriately secured at the end of trade
- minimising unnecessary prolonged opening of warehouse doors where practicable
- maintaining operational practices that support effective pest prevention and food safety outcomes.
Maintaining effective pest control standards is a shared responsibility and is critical to supporting food safety outcomes, protecting produce, maintaining clean operational environments and reducing contamination risks across the Brisbane Markets.
