A significant step forward in strengthening flood resilience at Brisbane Markets was taken yesterday, with the official sod turning of the Curzon Street Bridge replacement project.

Queensland Minister for Disaster Recovery Ann Leahy, Federal Member for Moreton Julie-Ann Campbell and Dianne Grey of Queensland Reconstruction Authority, joined BML Chair Anthony Kelly, Managing Director and CEO Andrew Young and Brismark Deputy Chairs Mark Murphy and Stephen Edwards, to officially mark the start of construction on this significant flood mitigation project.
The new bridge and roadway will be 1.2 m higher than the pre-existing bridge and roadway, meaning that access out of the Markets will extend later immediately prior to a flood event, and entry back into the Markets will be earlier following a flood event.
This project is being delivered as part of the Queensland Resilience and Risk Reduction Program (QRRRP). The QRRRP is funded by the Australian and Queensland Governments through efficiencies realised under the joint Commonwealth-state Disaster Recovery Funding Arrangements (DRFA).
The total project cost is approximately $5.3 million with contributions made by QRRRP of $2.5 million, Brismark $500,000 and Brisbane Markets Limited $2.3 million.
