Brisbane Markets Limited (BML) reminds all Markets users of important safety protocols outlined in the Brisbane Markets Regulations and Traffic Management Plan.
Over the past two years there has been a significant increase in the number of incidents involving a forklift striking a pedestrian on common area roadways and hardstand areas inside the Markets.
Each of these incidents has resulted in injuries being caused to the pedestrian and subsequent investigations by Workplace Health and Safety Queensland (WHSQ), the Government safety regulator.
All Markets users have an obligation to comply with the Brisbane Markets Regulations and Traffic Management Plan. In addition, Tenants are advised to regularly check and update their own Workplace Health and Safety Management Programs.
The safety of all Markets users is paramount. In particular, BML reminds forklift drivers and pedestrians of their shared responsibility to be vigilant and aware of their surroundings at all times.
Forklift operators
- All forklift operators must hold a valid High Risk Work Licence and obtain a Brisbane Markets Forklift Operator Permit before operating a forklift within the Brisbane Markets. Forklift operators working on a logbook are required to always be supervised by a licenced person.
- Always wear a seatbelt and do not operate a mobile device while driving.
- Ensure that forklifts are equipped with audible alarms and warning lights to alert pedestrians of their presence.
- Maintain a safe speed and keep a clear line of sight while operating forklifts, especially when navigating through shared zones.
- When the front view is obstructed, travel in reverse looking in the direction of travel.
- In areas where pedestrians and plant operate in a shared zone, it is recommended to have designated spotters to mitigate risk of collision.
Pedestrian safety
- Pedestrians should always remain vigilant and aware of their surroundings, especially when walking near operational forklifts or moving plant machinery.
- Use designated pedestrian walkways and avoid walking in areas designated for forklift operations whenever possible.
- Never assume that a forklift operator can see you. Make eye contact with the operator to ensure they are aware of your presence before crossing their path.
- Exercise caution when walking near pallets or areas where visibility may be obstructed.
- If your view is obstructed, take extra care to look out for oncoming forklifts or other moving plant machinery.
- To ensure safety, do not enter the zone where a forklift and a truck are engaged in loading or unloading operations.
- Clear communication between forklift operators and pedestrians is essential. If you are unsure whether it is safe to proceed, seek confirmation from the operator before crossing their path.
