All Brisbane Markets Tenants, Buyers and Service Providers need to be aware that over the past two years there has been a significant increase in the number of incidents involving a forklift striking a pedestrian on Common Area roadways and hardstand areas inside the Markets.
Urgent action is now required by all Tenants and Markets Users to address this situation. We must all work together to ensure safe work practices and situational awareness on Common Area roadways improves.
This will include BML increasing enforcement of the Forklift Rules, as contained in the Brisbane Markets Regulations, with a particular focus on forklift operators following standard road rules, including
- not cutting corners,
- giving way to pedestrians,
- obeying speed limits,
- obeying traffic signs,
- not driving within exclusion zones, and
- driving responsibly.
In addition, BML has consulted with Brismark in relation to the introduction of Pedestrian Rules, which will also become enforceable under the Brisbane Markets Regulations. The Pedestrian Rules are intended to encourage pedestrians to take more responsibility for their own safety and not put themselves in harm’s way through their own lack of attention and unsafe behaviours.
Compliance with the Pedestrian Rules will help protect you, your business, and your forklift operators from the unintended but serious consequences which occur from incidents which result in personal injuries.
