The start of a new year serves as a timely reminder to Brisbane Markets users that our shared focus for 2026 remains clear – safety is at the core of all our operations.
Safety on site is fundamental to the way we operate at the Brisbane Markets. With more than 4,500 people and nearly 400 forklifts on site each day, pedestrian and forklift safety remains a critical priority.
Given the shared use of operational areas, pedestrians must adhere to the recently released Pedestrian Rules and:
- Remain alert and aware of all vehicle movements, including forklifts, cars and trucks.
- Use designated pedestrian walkways and avoid forklift operation areas whenever possible.
- Exercise caution when walking near pallets, stacked goods or other objects and structure.
- Always wear high-visibility clothing and enclosed footwear.
- Never approach an operating forklift. Signal the operator and wait until the forklift has completely stopped before moving closer.
In addition, forklift operators must actively prioritise safety and meet the following requirements:
- Hold a valid High Risk Work Licence and a Brisbane Markets Forklift Operator Permit.
- Drive responsibly by maintaining a safe speed and clear line of sight.
- Exercise heightened situational awareness in areas where pedestrians and mobile plant operate together.
- Ensure forklifts are equipped with audible alarms and warning lights to alert pedestrians.
- Only use designated roadways and do not cut corners or travel through Buyers bays.
Through continued awareness, compliance and cooperation, together we are investing in the long-term success of the Markets as well as the safety of the people who bring it to life each day.
